How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
