Root vegetables like carrots, beets, and other root vegetables can also be grown in June. You can also plant another radish crop during this period.

It is important that you prepare your garden for the possibility of more rain, in addition to planting summer-flowering varieties. Heatwaves can occur in June in the Southeast so it is important to protect your crops. In addition, you'll want to make sure your automatic irrigation system is working properly. If you have late-blooming perennials, you'll want to get them in the ground as soon as possible. They'll reach a height where it will be very difficult to remove them.

As the temperature starts to rise, you will need to be more consistent with watering your plants. You can compensate for the water lost by giving your plants extra water while you wait for Mother Nature's rain to pour down on your garden. For plants to thrive, they need at most one inch of rain per week. However, if your climate is hot, more will be required. A series of shallow waterings is more beneficial than a deeper one.

The weather in June will affect the growth of your garden. Although July is a warm month, it can still get hot. To avoid the growth of fungus or other pests, you should water your garden every day. A rain gauge can be set up to measure how much Mother Nature rains. If you don't get enough rain, you will need to add water.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
