FAQ

What is the minimum space required to grow vegetables?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

How do you prepare the soil for a vegetable garden?

Preparing soil is simple for a vegetable garden. First, you should remove all weeds around the area where you want to plant vegetables. Then, add organic matter such as composted manure, leaves, grass clippings, straw, or wood chips. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

Do I need any special equipment?

Not really. All you need are a trowel or shovel and a watering can.

Can I grow vegetables in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. Yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. You can also use containers as raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

How much light does a tree need?

It depends on the type of plant. Some plants need 12 hours per day of direct sunlight. Some prefer 8 hours of indirect sunshine. Most vegetables need 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What is the first thing to do when starting a garden?

When beginning a garden, the first thing to do is to prepare the soil. This includes adding organic material such as composted horse manure, grass clippings or leaves, straw and the like, which provides plant nutrients. Next, place seeds or seedlings in prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination can take up to ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. Pick leaves frequently to encourage bushier growth.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
