FAQ

What should you do first when you start a garden?

First, prepare the soil before you start a garden. This includes adding organic matter like composted cow manure, grass clippings leaves, straw, and so on, which will help to provide plant nutrients. Next, you will plant your seeds or seedlings directly into the prepared holes. Then, water well.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

A tomato seed is the best seed to start indoors. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. Be aware of diseases like bacterial wilt which can quickly kill plants.

When is the best month to plant a vegetable garden in my area?

It is best to plant vegetables between April and June. This is when the soil gets warmest, and plants tend to grow quickly. If you live outside of a warm climate, you might be better off waiting until July or August.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

How do you prepare soil for a vegetable gardening?

It is simple to prepare soil for your vegetable garden. The first step is to remove any weeds that may be in the area where your vegetable garden will be planted. Then, add organic matter such as composted manure, leaves, grass clippings, straw, or wood chips. Finally, water well and wait until plants sprout.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

What kind of lighting works best for growing plants indoors?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They can also provide steady lighting without flickering and dimming. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs consume up to 75% less electricity than traditional bulbs.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
