FAQ

Can I grow vegetables indoors?

Yes, you can grow vegetables indoors during winter. You will need a greenhouse or grow lighting. Before buying a greenhouse, check with your local laws.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

You can tell by looking at the color of the dirt. Darker soils contain more organic matter than lighter-colored ones. Another option is to test the soil. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You will still get plenty of produce regardless of how you do it.

When can you plant flowers in your garden?

When the weather is milder and the soil has a good moisture content, spring is the best time to plant flowers. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor gardening is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do I prepare the soil for a garden?

Preparing soil is simple for a vegetable garden. First, you should remove all weeds around the area where you want to plant vegetables. After that, add organic material such as composted soil, leaves, grass clips, straw or wood chips. Finally, water well and wait until plants sprout.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Make sure the pot is deep enough for the root ball to be held. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
