FAQ

Which seeds should start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. You should be cautious when putting tomatoes into pots. You should not plant tomatoes too soon. The soil can dry out, and the roots could rot. Be aware of diseases like bacterial wilt which can quickly kill plants.

Which layout is best for vegetable gardens?

Your location will determine the best layout for your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. However, if you live in a rural area, you should space out your plants for maximum yield.

What should I do the first time you want to start a vegetable garden?

When beginning a garden, the first thing to do is to prepare the soil. This involves adding organic matter, such as composted soil, grass clippings and leaves, straw or other material, to help provide nutrients for the plants. Next, place seeds or seedlings in prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer to that question is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
