FAQ
What vegetables do you recommend growing together?
Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.
What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?
Hydroponic gardening uses nutrients-rich water to feed plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. You can have your farm right at your house!
How many hours of daylight does a plant really need?
It depends on which plant it is. Some plants need 12 hours of direct sun per day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.
What equipment do I need to grow vegetables?
You're not wrong. All you need is a shovel, trowel, watering can, and maybe a rake.
What time should I plant herbs in my garden?
When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. Plant them in full sun for best results. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. When the plants have started to grow, transfer them into bright indirect sunlight. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.
Which kind of lighting is most effective for growing indoor plants?
Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They can also provide steady lighting without flickering and dimming. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs can use up to 75% more energy than traditional bulbs.

How To
Organic fertilizers for your garden
Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.
There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:
* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.
* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.
* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.
* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.
* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.
* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.
Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.
Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
