FAQ

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

What should I do the first time you want to start a vegetable garden?

The first step to starting a garden is to prepare it. This involves adding organic matter like composted manure and grass clippings as well as leaves, straw, straw, and other materials that provide nutrients to the soil. Next, plant the seeds or seedlings in the holes. Then, water well.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Make sure the pot is deep enough for the root ball to be held. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

Is it possible to grow vegetables indoors?

Yes, you can grow vegetables inside in the winter. A greenhouse or grow light will be required. Make sure to check with local laws before doing this.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. When the weather is warm, transplant the pepper and tomato plants outside.

When to plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. To get the best results, they should be planted in full sun. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. When plants are growing, place them in bright indirect lighting. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 hours in indirect sunlight. Most vegetables need at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour time period.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
