Plants For Bird Bath Planter Ideas

You can purchase a cracked birdbath from a yard sale if your goal is to find different plants for bird baths. These containers work well with succulents and plants that have short roots. Make sure you choose the right potting mix to grow your plants. Use a cactus mixture when planting succulents. So that water evaporates slowly, it's best to place the birdbath in partial shade. Also, make sure that the water level in your birdbath is adequate. If not, it can saturate the roots of the plant.

Various succulents make great plants for birdbaths. Carolina moonseed has beautiful yellow, purple, and pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the white wings of bluebirds. You can also grow Virginia creeper and trumpet creeper, both with lovely foliage. All these plants thrive in USDA zones 6 through 9. Some plants will grow in cooler climates but others will thrive in hotter environments.

Weeping myoporum is another great choice for birdbaths. This large shrub grows well in part shade. The white flowers attracted insects to the shrub. Dwarf conifers are also suitable plants for birdbaths because they require minimal maintenance and are relatively small. Jervis dwarf Canadian Canadian hemlock is the best, along with Mont Bruno boxwood (and lime glow juniper). Birds can use dwarf conifers as perches.

You can fill a birdbath using rocks, small artifacts, or flowers. Make sure to add some herbs to your birdbath. This will give you a wide range of herbs for cooking and other purposes. This is especially helpful in winter months when cold temperatures threaten to kill your plants. The options are endless. You can choose from a variety of flowers or other plants.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
