vegetable garden tips and tricks

Consider the amount of sunlight your herbs will need when planting them in your kitchen garden. Most of these culinary herbs prefer full to partial sun. To find out the exact amount of sunshine each plant requires, check the tag. A sunny window with six to eight hours of sunshine per day is the best place for them. If you don’t live in a sunny location, grow them using grow lights. This is a costly option but worthwhile.

If you want to grow kitchen herbs from seed, you'll need to start them indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost. Fill a pot about an inch deep with potting earth. Place seeds in the soil. You should also cover larger seeds with soil. For a few days, wrap the pot in plastic wrap to encourage germination. When the seedlings start appearing, you can remove the plastic.

If you want your kitchen to look as beautiful as possible, consider adding herbs to it. Aromatic herbs like rosemary, thyme and other herbs can enhance the flavour of most dishes. These plants can be used to create a beautiful display in your kitchen. They can also be used as decoration. For example, if you have a window facing north, you might want to plant mint. This will produce an aromatic garden with a hint of color.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
