FAQ

Are pots possible to grow fruit trees?

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. You should make sure that your pot has drainage holes to keep excess moisture from rotting the tree. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will keep the tree from becoming stressed.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
